It might seem like an obvious answer — no, of course not. But the reality of night flying is more nuanced than simply "take your sunglasses off when the sun goes down." Transitioning from day to night flying, managing cockpit lighting, and protecting your night vision are all areas where eyewear choices matter more than most pilots realize.
The Golden Rule: No Tinted Lenses at Night
Let's start with the clear answer: standard tinted sunglasses should never be worn during night flight. Any lens that reduces light transmission — even lightly tinted ones — will impair your ability to see in low-light conditions and significantly degrade your night vision. This is a safety-critical issue, not a preference.
The FAA and most aviation authorities are explicit: tinted lenses are not appropriate for night flying.
The Night Vision Challenge
Human eyes take approximately 30 minutes to fully adapt to darkness — a process called dark adaptation. Photochromic Lenses: A Practical Day-to-Night Option
Photochromic lenses that automatically lighten as ambient light decreases can be a practical solution for pilots flying through the day-night transition. However, they must be fully clear (not just lighter) before night flight begins, and some photochromic lenses don't fully clear in the cockpit due to UV-blocking windscreens.
