Most people think about sun protection on the beach or at the pool. But pilots face one of the highest UV exposures of any profession — and most don't give it a second thought. UV Radiation Increases with Altitude

The Earth's atmosphere acts as a natural UV filter. The higher you fly, the thinner that filter becomes. Here's what the numbers look like:

  • At sea level: Baseline UV exposure.
  • At 10,000 ft: UV intensity increases by approximately 25%.
  • At 30,000 ft: UV intensity can be nearly double that at sea level.
  • Above 40,000 ft: Exposure increases even further, with less atmospheric protection.

For commercial pilots logging hundreds of hours per year at cruise altitude, cumulative UV exposure is a serious long-term health concern.

The Health Risks of UV Exposure for Pilots

Prolonged UV exposure without proper eye protection is linked to several serious conditions:

Cataracts

UV radiation accelerates the clouding of the eye's natural lens. Studies have shown that pilots have a significantly higher rate of cataract development compared to the general population — a direct consequence of elevated UV exposure at altitude.

Macular Degeneration

Cumulative UV and high-energy visible (HEV) light exposure is associated with damage to the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. This can lead to permanent vision loss over time.

Photokeratitis

Essentially a sunburn of the cornea, photokeratitis causes temporary but painful inflammation, blurred vision, and light sensitivity. It can occur after even short periods of intense UV exposure at altitude.

Pterygium

A growth of tissue on the white of the eye that can extend over the cornea and affect vision. UV exposure is a primary risk factor.

What to Look for in UV-Protective Aviation Eyewear
